White settler now living in Aberdeen, used to stay in The Felling, can relate to quite a few of the Pubs, Felling Squre must have more Pubs & Clubs per Mt Square than any other area.
Blue Bell, Shakespeare, Jubilee Half Way, Jem, Holly Hill, Felling Social, Grayhound

> Hi ,
I recently came across a snippet of "history " in Gateshead Central Library In the Newcastle Courant , dated December the 8th 1770 a Captain Liddle was attacked by footpads on the Long Bank ( Eighton Banks). He went to the Three Tuns to get help . Now I know from a previous Newspaper snippet that there was a Three Tuns in Birtley in 1803 ( Newcastle Courant Hue and Cry 17-09-1803 page 1 ( Someone reporting the loss of a watch) .
Is there evidence that there was a Three Tuns in Birtley in 1770 ? And where was it exactly ? Was it before or after the Coach and Horses , that is going toweards Durham ? The other explanation is that the Three Tuns in the 1770 snippet was the one at Sheriff Hill. This Three tuns was there in 1806 .

Many thanks for putting together this website Rob!

I had my first(illegal) pint at The Three Tuns in Sheriff Hill (my Dads pub)in 1959 -- As I am a direct descendant of Geordie Ridley (Blaydon Races etc)I was pleased to see the "remember when" picture of the Ridley Arms -- I have been living in Canada for the past 30 years and when I come home I always end up at the Fell pubs. (I used to have a newspaper round in Low Fell)

Thanks again

Danny

I am trying to locate an old pub of Winlaton called the Old House Inn. It stood next to the Highlander Front St Winlaton. My great grandfather was innkeeper around 1926.

Hey Rob

Was wondering if you've ventured into the Borough Arms on Bensham Road lately? U should check it out sometime. My bro-in-law has just took it over, theres a good selection of real ales, live music on most weeks and a great beer garden. I've was lead to believe it is the oldest pub in Gateshead, some say it isn't...I thought you would be the person to ask??!!?? www.myspace.com/borougharms

i notice you put the mill house in anyway, despite confirming it's in sunderland. just to confirm i'm not just a pedant, i remember my dad taking me to the black horse when i was a nipper (we lived on dean street, just round the corner). he used to play on the bandit in the passageway and i used to have a lemonade and talk to the barmaid. we are talking about 1980 here and i would have been about 6. don't worry though, i didn't start on the exhibition until i was about 9.

Great site.
Wonderful to see the pictures of all the pubs in Gateshead.
I have been in just about them all.
I was brought up in Wilson Street, Teams, just behind the Beaconsfield Hotel. Nobdy called it that though. It was always "The Donnie"
Just down the road was the old Forester's Arms always known as " The Coffin " Pity you did not have an old picture of that one. The new Foresters used to have pictures of the old one on their wall.
My mother worked in both of these and in many others around the town.

i may be wrong, but your list doesn't appear to include the mill house at the bottom of eighton banks.
looking in a rather old a to z it's difficult to confirm if this is in gateshead or sunderland area but it looks like it just squeezes into gateshead.

A lovely site to wander around. I`m a 50 year old Geordie exile living permanently in Tokyo. I spent my first 20 years in Gateshead (Bensham / Deckham area). I have had a thoroughly enjoyable and nostalgic time 'visiting` all the pubs I used to frequent in my mis-spent youth from the age of 17.I have just given your site address to another Gateshead exile who lives next door to me in Tokyo!! My 'local` was the bar in the Springfield Hotel but usually drank in Low fell - the Belle Vue and the pubs nearby when I was in my late teens.

Hi Rob
You've made this antipodean very happy. Thank you.
My methodist parents, grandparents and great grandparents just forgot to pass on the news that both my Durham great great grandfathers were Publicans!
The Heslop's & Harrisons at the Moulders Arms, Birtley and the Gibsons at the Coach & Horses, Birtley. For the past couple of years I've been wanting pictures of both Pubs and yesterday I Googled Gateshead and not Birtley and there they were. What a joy!
Thank you again

The Collingwood pub on Sunderland Rd. now a painter & decorators premises, before that Orbit Computers premises, before that a furniture shop for a while, before that a bingo hall, empty on odd occasions, originally a pub. Named after Lord Cuthbert Collingwood of Battle of Trafalgar fame.
Not sure about the Greyhound on Felling High St., used to be a pub there but demolished in the 60's or 70's, but the modern Greyhound is in Felling Square opposite the Coo-op.
Never heard of the Brandling on Sunderland Road, only the old Felling Railway Station which was originally Brandling Junction named after the Felling Lords of the Manor family, the Brandlings. May have been a pub near it called the Brandling.
Never heard of the Hope & Anchor in Windy Nook. Only know the Black House which in Victorian times was called The Wagon, and the Bay Horse, also Fiddlers, which used to be the Ravensworth Arms, commonly called by the locals "Finnigans" after one of its landlords.

My great grandmother was born in The Old Engine in the year of 1868 and eventhough you have no picture on your site, I really enjoyed have a good nose. My grandfather and grandmother lived on the High Street and Bensham Road until 1941 when they moved to Birmingham. I had a lovely time thinking that he would have had a few halves in many of the pubs you have pics of.

Thank you again, and bottom ups.

Greyhound, Felling

I think there is a [distant] picture of this on your linked website http://www.39steps.com/4752.html
where DSCF3441.jpg shows the west side of the High Street, Felling. On that website the Greyhound is said to be opposite the Halfway House [and it was]. The picture has 4 cars on that side of the road and the third from the left looks to be parked outside the Greyhound.
The back room was our "canteen" during 1967/8.

A lot of memories here - and a few changes!
Was 'The Swan' at Sheriff Hill the one called 'The White Swan' - on Windy Nook Road?
The two 'Cannons' - at Sheriff Hill and Low Fell - seem to have got themselves mixed up! 50 yrs. ago the one at Low Fell was the 'New Cannon' and the one at Sheriff Hill was the 'Old Cannon'!
Thanks for the memories!

I love your site! I found it this morning, looking specifically for the Black Horse. 20 years ago I bought a copper-topped oak table at an antique store in Seattle WA, USA. I happened to turn it over this morning while cleaning it and found Black Horse Low Fell chalked on the underside. I was told at purchase that it was a pub table. I've no idea how old it is but I'm thrilled to see where it came from! If anyone remembers how long ago they used tables like that, I'd love to know. I'm fascinated by your images of the Black Horse over time.

This is a great site, Rob. I've added it to my "favourites" so I'll be following your conquests with interest! There are many lovely pub buildings, and I'm looking forward to testing a few of those I wasn't aware of next time I'm back home. Sadly, some of the more modern constructions are pretty ugly, and even if I were desperate for a pint I don't think I'd be going in.
The Black Horse is also my favourite, looking back. Someone mentioned the lady who used to deliver drinks about 20 years ago, and never made a mistake with the change. Well, that was my Auntie Lena (Rowell), husband of George, then owner of the Rowell's chipshop over the road (which my mam actually ran for a couple of years). The Black Horse also features in my book, "Back Lanes and Muddy Pitches" - I'm sorry but I couldn't not mention it, could I?!
Congratulations on a great site

Great to see old photos as well...
Dad was born in Gateshead Arms (1917) and I had my first drink there on nostalgic visit in 2004!
His great aunt Jane Anna WIlinson was licensee and landlady from about 1890's to 1930's.
Grandma Gladys Burton lived there too .. Gladys sister was born in Dun Cow.
My great grandfather James Hird (1840 Forfar 1895 Gateshead) married the daughter of the landlord of The Globe and started his pub biusiness when father in law died .. he also had the Brunswick Hotel.
Many Burton relatives were landlords and somehow dad always wanted to visit them on trips back home to Tyneside..

Margaret.

Although not a fan of the coloured nectar, I also take photos of pubs when I'm out, but of PUB SIGNS. Must try and get them on a site like yours.

Hi Rob

Great site and congratulations on adding such an invaluable resource to the Internet. All to often a pub disappears without a readily avaiable photographic record being avaialable - well you have sorted that out for Gateshead!

Great stuff and I hope your site goees from strength to strength.

Best Wishes and Gan Canny Marra

I've noticed that all the pubs in the Low Fell circuit start with A B or C except for the Victoria and Gateshead Arms..this could explain why they're not doing so well. Technically the Cannon is now a Y. If I was running it I'd revert back.

Dear Geordie Born, Local Government Reorganistion in 1974 must have passed you by. Gateshead does now include Blaydon, Whickham etc
South Tyneside is South Shields, Boldon et al
Do try to keep up, Geordie Born

Gateshead is a small place just over the water from Geordieland, Newcastle. It does not include Whickham, Blaydon etc etc. By the borough, do you mean South Tyneside?

Good try though!

I may be opening this pub shortly as it is currently closed...can anyone inform me of the history, and especially the atmosphere?

Is it a trouble pub?

The memories that I got when I looked at some of the pubs. A pity that the "Cup And Coins" and "The Shakespeare" in Felling were pulled down before a decent photo was taken of them. I've got one of the Cup and Coins, but it's too far away and crappy. "The Magpie" in Bensham is also dearly missed. Pulled down before a decent photo of it was taken. I nearly grew up in that pub as it was owned by some family friends with kids that were my age then. Memories indeed!!! I love the sight. Keep adding. Much thanks.

Tho' I share your's and Chris' sentiments about The Black Horse I wish to record the Victoria's (Low Fell) part in the infamous "Diary Affair" of 1965 which started with my scaling of Heathfield School's metalwork room tower with a bra, the police visiting my parents home concerning underage drinking (my father denied he was underage, but was, nevertheless, flattered and culminating in a scandal that rocked Gateshead's teenage community. There must be people out there who recall this and indeed how many people have similar nostalgic memories of other Gateshead pubs. I know I feel the better for this very public confession
