It's open if the name's in red,
Go get a pint, with a frothy head.
If its name's in brown,
It's gone..brown bread...dead
If the name's been changed
It's in a blue hue
And the new name
Is provided for you

Metro Centre, Gateshead
Jon's Visit: 17/10/2016
Jon's Score: 9
This is a very well patronised pub..more so than other "pubs" in the Metro Centre. It is the only real pub in the Metro Centre. All others are eating places that serve drinks..some have been included on this website

Wheatsheaf

Felling Gateshead
Rob's Visit: 14/9/03
Rob's Score: 8

Real Ale pub.Very good.

The original Wheatsheaf was next to the pinfold in Nether Heworth and many vestry meetings were held in the parlour early in the 19th century, instead of at the presbytery across the road. Cattle drovers used the Wheatsheaf to quench their thirsts, while their animals rested in the enclosure. The building was pulled down in about 1898, when the North Eastern Railway Company, to make a cutting crossed by a new bridge, excavated a tunnel. The public house in the photograph was built in 1907...or was it renovated in 1907...see below

1938 William Charlton

As of 2016..with new neighbours

If the one at Nether Heworth was pulled down in about 1898 this one must be its replacement about then, so the one marked 1907..just 9 years later, must be this building renovated...mustn't it? Indeed, the first floor was rebuilt

This pub was often used for Vestry & other meetings. For example after Felling Pit Disaster there was a meeting in the Wheatsheaf chaired by John Hodgson when it was decided to raise funds for the victims' dependents.
The pub was close to the penfold and animals were rested in the penfold while herders partook of refreshment. Later, after its demoltion The Wheatsheaf in Carlisle Street took its licence/name
